As an Ethiopian immigrant in the U.S., graduating from college was a momentous occasion that marked the culmination of years of hard work and determination. As someone who came to this country as a young adult, I had to overcome numerous challenges and obstacles to succeed in my studies.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was the language barrier. Despite having strong command of the English language, there were still many times when I struggled to understand lectures, readings, and assignments. This required me to put in extra effort and time to keep up with my classmates and stay on track.

Another challenge I faced was adjusting to the cultural differences between Ethiopia and the U.S. Coming from a collectivistic culture, I had to learn how to navigate the individualistic culture of the U.S. and adapt to its values and norms. This included everything from building relationships with my professors and classmates, to understanding the expectations and standards of academic success.

Despite these challenges, I never gave up on my dreams of earning a college degree. I worked tirelessly to improve my English skills and to familiarize myself with American culture, and I also sought out support and guidance from mentors, advisors, and fellow students who could help me along the way. Through persistence and perseverance, I was able to graduate from college with a degree that I am incredibly proud of.

Graduating from college as an Ethiopian immigrant in the U.S. was a personal achievement that I will always cherish. It not only showed me that I am capable of overcoming obstacles and achieving my goals, but it also opened up numerous opportunities for me to build a successful career and to make a positive contribution to society. I am grateful for the experiences and lessons that I gained during my time in college, and I am excited to see where my education will take me in the future.

The point is: If I managed to do it, you can too. If you need help on something reach out to CU Denver; they have tons of resources that may help you achieve your goal. You’ve got this!

Cheers,
Neway
